Why so many driveways and patios fail within a few years
A driveway or patio looks like a simple job from the outside: dig out, lay a base, put the blocks or slabs down. In practice, the excavation depth, the type and compaction of sub-base material, the falls built in for surface water, and the edging that holds everything in place are what decide whether the job lasts. Skip any of those steps and the surface will tell you within a season or two, usually as sinking, cracking or standing water against the house.
Surface water is the risk that causes the most damage after the fact. A driveway or patio laid without proper falls and drainage can push rainwater towards the property, and under current regulations, hard surfacing at the front of a house also has drainage requirements that a rushed job can miss entirely.

How the job runs from first call to sign-off

A fixed quote is put together covering excavation, sub-base, drainage, edging and the chosen surface finish, normally turned around within a week of the survey.
STEP 03
Excavation and sub-base
The area is excavated to the correct depth for its intended use, existing material is removed or reused where suitable, and a properly compacted sub-base is laid to the falls needed for drainage.
STEP 04
Drainage and edging
Surface water drainage, soakaways or permeable jointing are installed as required, and edge restraints are set to hold the finished surface in place and stop long-term spread or movement.
STEP 05
Surfacing and finishing
Block paving, resin, slabs or porcelain are laid to the agreed pattern and levels, joints are finished, and the site is cleared, with the surface checked for correct falls before we sign the job off.

Materials, methods and how driveways and patios fit into a wider project
Driveways and patios come in a range of finishes and are suited to different situations. Here is how we approach the main options.
Block paved driveways
Block paving remains the most common driveway finish because individual blocks can be lifted and replaced if ever needed, and it copes well with vehicle loading when the sub-base underneath is correctly specified. We lay block paving on a compacted Type 1 sub-base of a depth suited to the intended traffic, with a sharp sand bedding layer, properly restrained edges and joints filled with kiln-dried sand. Pattern, colour and block size are agreed at design stage, and existing dropped kerbs or access points are factored into the layout.
Resin-bound surfacing
Resin-bound driveways give a smooth, permeable finish that is popular for its appearance and low maintenance, but the result depends entirely on the base beneath it. We install resin surfacing over a correctly laid and compacted sub-base, usually with a porous macadam or concrete base layer, so the resin bonds properly and drains as intended rather than cracking or pooling where the base has moved.
Slabbed and porcelain patios
Patios are laid to falls that take water away from the house, on a full mortar bed or, for porcelain, a bedding system suited to the tile thickness and finish. We check finished patio levels against existing damp courses and thresholds before laying begins, since a patio set too high against the house wall is one of the most common causes of damp problems after the fact.
Drainage and sub-base preparation
Whatever the surface finish, the sub-base and drainage decisions are made first. That includes excavation depth suited to vehicle or foot traffic, geotextile membranes where ground conditions require them, compacted granular sub-base, and either a soakaway, permeable jointing or a piped drainage connection depending on the site and current surface water requirements. This is the stage most driveway failures trace back to, and it is where our groundworks experience is applied.
Combined schemes with extensions and landscaping
Driveways and patios are frequently priced and programmed alongside a wider extension, new build or landscaping project.
